When should I replace my garden fence?

This is a question we hear all the time. And we get it! It can be tough to know when a repair job will do the trick, and when it’s time to replace the whole thing. Our fences go through a lot, especially here in the UK, where we get everything from heavy rain, wind and storms to much hotter (if we’re lucky) summers.

The lifespan of your fence ultimately depends on the material and installation quality. Generally, a sturdy garden fence should last for 10 to 20 years but there are other factors that come into play; from storm and frost damage, to simply wanting a fresh look.

Here are some quick questions that might indicate if it’s time to start looking for something new:

Is it tilting or leaning?

A leaning fence is a good indication that your fence is showing the effects of weather damage. Any rotting or existing damage will also make your fences more susceptible to weathering so it’s definitely something to look out for.

Take a step back and give your fencing a bit of an inspection. Is it wobbling or tilting in any way? If so, it might be time for a change.

Is it decaying or falling apart?

The most common killer of wooden fences is wood rot. It’s an irreversible process (though it can be slowed via regular treatment) and so if you’re seeing any signs of rot damage it could very well be time for a change. If there are missing planks or nails this is also a good time to consider a replacement.

Are you after a new look?

Sometimes it’s not about something going wrong, but simply a change in your visual preferences. If you’re reworking the aesthetic of your garden and are ready for something new, then changing your fencing can make a huge impact.

Are repair expenses piling up?

Making repairs is an economical and environmentally friendly way to improve the quality of your fence. However, no one wants to spend more on repairs than it would cost to replace the fence in the first place. If repair costs are piling up, ask yourself if it will work out more affordable and efficient in the long run to simply change out the fence.
